Elephant Week

This week was the week of elephants.  We had lots of fun.  Here are the crafts that we did this week.  I am so thankful for those art craft ideas that are out there on different sites.  They make my life so much easier.
Elephant #1  -- The Handprint Elephant
This was a very cute idea.  However, my girl is not one for dirty hands.  She has some issues with getting her hand in paint.  It just doesn’t end well.  So we made modifications to this and made it Mickey’s own.  I am not sure if it came out looking anything like an elephant.  But everything with glitter makes her day a good one.

She has a tree on the side because Elephants are herbivores.  If you use your imagination hats you can see the elephant.  Winking smile
Craft #2  Toilet Paper Roll Elephant
DLTK site has a lot of ideas on so many different animals.  I am loving this site.  This is a super cute elephant.  I think we must have downloaded a different pattern.  But again, anything with glitter is a good day. I think we used glitter everyday but today.

Elephant #3 Elephant Shapes  This one was a simple cut out of shapes and paste together.  Mickey took it a step further and added her glitter.
Craft #4  Elephant Mask
This one is one that Mickey looked forward to all week to do.  She loved it and has been playing with it throughout the day today.  It was simple but lots of enjoyment!  Again it was from the DTLK site…  This site provides printouts that you use.  Love it!
Here is Mickey displaying her mask!
This week has been good in the areas of school.  She is doing really well at reading. I think that we may up her lessons next week and see if picking up the pace will be good for her.  In math this week we were focused on counting by 10’s.  This is something that she is very good at so the week was a bit of review for her.  However, I think that she finally got the concept that dimes are 10’s.
I think that tomorrow we are going to try out a homeschool group.  This is a new group and we figure it was a good one to try out.  Thankfully Daddy will have Nate so that we can see if it is something that Nate can attend too.

Horse Week

Last week was horse week.  We did crafts and read short stories on horses.  My daughter loves horses and had a blast this week.  I am learning that I need to do extra planning to make sure we get fun crafts into our schedule. I am not the crafty person my nature.  I don’t mind doing them but I don’t come up with them on my own.  Thankful for the internet, for pinterest and those crafty people that share their ideas with homeschooling moms like me.  I like how my girl takes the art projects and make them her own.  She chooses her own way to make these crafts and they are truly uniquely her.  I know that is how art should be but sometimes with a color in the lines, rule following momma like me I have to remind myself that it okay to let your girl be free in her expression.
Craft #1 – Horse out of a toilet paper roll.  Very cute and very easy!
image is where I found this craft.  She has a printable available so you can make either a girl horse or the horse above.  My girl loves this one!  Very cute.  Our horse has been keeping us company this week.
Here is Mickey with hers

Craft #2 – Horse made from a footprint.

I found this craft at this website .  Very cute and very easy.  Here is Mickey with hers footprint horse.  See what I mean about making it her own??

Making it a point to add in art has been a great thing for my artist Mickey.  I finding a lot of crafts and will be sharing the sites that are most helpful to me as well as sharing the crafts that Mickey enjoys the most. Our next theme is elephant.  I never knew there were so many elephant crafts out there.

Finished Part 1

Today was a milestone for Mickey.  She finished part 1 of her McRuffy reading material.  I would take her smiling face picture with her book but she is currently laying on the couch, SICK.  I won’t make her get up to take a picture but we will soon, I promise.
Through her first half of her reading she has learned many, many words.  She can sound out small simple words such as cat, duck, hog and dig.  She just finished learning color words such as orange, pink, black, blue, red, brown, black, green and of course her favorite, yellow!  She is able to understand what she is reading and keep the content of what she has read to be able to answer questions about the book.  Her writing and coloring has greatly improved over the last semester.  When we started out she would simply trace her name that I wrote out for her.  Now she writes her name and many other words during the day.  I am thankful that she is learning phonics and can sound out words.  I learned to read by sight reading.  I can’t tell you how difficult it has been for me to spell words.  I am hoping that the skills she is learning now will help her throughout life.  (I am even learning phonics and rules for reading and spelling that I never knew existed!  My life is forever changed for the better.

School in Session

After a busy Christmas break we are back in session.  We took 2 weeks off at Christmas time.  We traveled to see family and celebrated my little girl’s 6th birthday.  Wow!  I can’t believe how fast time passes and I have a 6 year old.  She is very happy to be 6.  Her goal was to be reading by the time she was 6 and she is a reader.  I don’t think that she realizes how much of a reader she is.  I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching her to read and learning some phonics tools along the way.
My goals for this semester is to finish our curriculum.  I love the McRuffy curriculum.  It takes it slowly and has plenty of hands on experience to make my girl happy.  I also plan to look ahead to 1st grade and see what our goal is for next year.  I also am also making it a goal to blog regularly about our experience.
I am also going to be better about adding science and art to our school week.  This means that I need to do more regular planning.  To help with that area I bought an editable pdf homeschool planner from Homeschool Creations.  I am loving it so far.  My question to myself is why I haven’t done this sooner.  My planner has been a journal notebook.  It worked but I was finding I needed something more.  I think that this is going to help me have more of a efficient planning sessions.  Smile
