Painting Pottery

I do not like to go out of my comfort area.  But I am also a mom that knows that there some things that I know that my daughter would thoroughly enjoy.  So I got a coupon for a pottery place in El Paso and I took Mickey there a few weeks ago.  She had a blast.  It was also a good time to show Mickey that even though I didn’t feel real comfortable getting my creative juices going it was good to try new things.  New things that I may not be particularly good at.  I let Mickey loose and we had a great momma and Mickey afternoon.

The Home Stretch

I looked at the calendar today and realized that we are on the home stretch.  I laugh and wonder how that can be that this year went as fast as it did. I remember going to the home school conference last year and being completely overwhelmed and just not knowing what it was I was “supposed” to do.  I remember that there was a time that I was only going to do kindergarten and then promptly put her in 1st grade.  I look now as I am looking ahead to 1st grade and thankful that I am able to homeschool my daughter.

As I was sitting in this conference with other homeschool moms I was reminded that I was so against the idea of homeschool.  I really did not have a real reason why was against the whole idea other than it was not what I was normal to me.  I also remember the time when I did not think that I was capable enough to actually homeschool.  I was so afraid that I was going to mess everything up and my child would be behind where she needed to be.  I can tell you that did not happen.  I was thankful for those homeschooling pioneers who paved the way so that I could homeschool my children.

I am thankful that the Lord changed my heart and lead Jeff and I to homeschool our children.  This journey really has been the best for our family.

CAPE Homeschool Convention

I am thankful that I attended the homeschool convention in my home state.  I wasn’t sure that I needed to go this year.  I had the core of my curriculum planned for next year and just needed a few things to complete it.  I wasn’t a newbie this year so I wasn’t sure what I was going to need to go and listen to this year.  My husband told me that he thought I needed to go and he was going to make sure that it happened.  So I registered and off we went.
I think that one of the key things that I kept hearing over and over again is that we are in a season.  Right now with a little one and a young homeschooler things can get a bit crazy in my house.  My house is often on the messier side of things.  But my children are not going to be little forever and I need to be reminded to enjoy them being little.  This is just a season and I need to enjoy it because like the song goes I’m “gonna miss this”.
One of the helpful techniques I learned is about how to include my little guy in more school during the day.  I went to a session on how to teach multi levels.  The helpful hint was to start off the day together.  Use the beginning of the school day as the time when you read stories, do your daily devotional time or do your “circle time” with songs.  Anything where your little one can be fully involved.  It was said that when they are included in the beginning that they are more willing to let you focus some of your attention on the bigger kiddos and they can play.  Sometimes all they need to feel included is to sit on your lap.  I have found this to be true with my little guy.  So I learned something that I was doing right and something that I could use to help make the day go smoother.
I am still processing all the other stuff I learned at the conference.  I will continue to share as I continue to process.

Visit to the Zoo

I am very behind on my blogging.  I have Easter pics to go through and some other fun stuff to share.  But I decided to start on our zoo pictures from last week.  We were up in Albuquerque for a whirlwind of a trip because I was attending a homeschool conference.  We took an extra day and took the kiddos to the zoo, we had a blast!  Here are a few pictures….

Convention Week

I am excited that at the end of this week I am headed to my state’s homeschool convention.  I will listen and hopefully be encouraged by people who have been homeschooling much longer than I have.  If you have the opportunity to attend a homeschool convention near you, I would highly recommend it.  Going to the convention helps me feel like I am a part of something so much bigger than my kitchen table.  I was so encouraged last year that I felt that I could really do this homeschooling thing.  We are nearing the end of my daughter’s kindergarten school year and I am wondering what is up the road.
I am also really excited to look at the vendor’s tables.  I don’t feel like I made the best buy last year for our family.  So this year I am taking my hubby to see the vendor’s exhibits.  I also know that I have much of my core taken care of.  I do have hole’s that I am looking for ways to fill in.  But I have no specific ideas on what those will be.  I am looking for ideas.
My daughter will be attending the children’s convention and I think will love it.  She loves going and being around other children.  So this was a no brainer.  My son and Daddy will hang out at grandma’s house.  I will share what I have learned and hopefully encourage you also.
